  • Trip to the West coast

    Hey everyone!
Hi everyone, I just want to share my experience of riding to the west coast to Oregon then over to Washington, Idaho, Montana, and a smidgen in Wyoming.
    Pics attached.
I10 - Deming, Nm to turn up north to meet !40 west to California, not mention the tasty twisty roads from silver city to Arizona.

the fun started after staying in Winslow, Arizona on y way to L/a to get to the Pacific coast Highway. 50 miles out of winslow, close to flagstaff, I hit a weird winter type storm. I didnt think I was going to hit any weather, I checked my weather maps. anyway, the temps started out about 60 degrees, 40 in the morning, then quickly warmed. 40 miles east of flagstaff the temps began to drop rapidly in the 30's and hit a wall of hail, then it turned to rain and then to sleet/snow. yea weird. after Flagstaff, I hit another round of intense hail. then more sleet. By the time I made it to Williams, the temps had dropped into the lower 30's and more hail was falling, then heavy snow. it was noon, and stopped in Williams for the night. roads were questionable of ice, so I stopped to wait a day.
Williams is a route 66 town and lots to do, which is why I stopped there. been here several times before on previous trips, car and bike.
Snowed heavy the rest of the day, temps fluctuated, eventually dipped into the 20's overnight. No ice thank God!

Camped in Oregon before making a turn east in Portland, of course, it rained and traffic sucked! I think I sat at one point for 3 min before moving! You thought Houston was bad?!
Made my way east teetering on the Washington, Oregon border where it rained most of the way. found a state park across the Oregon border into Washington, (A river separates the states borders).
    More Oregon, northern California coastline.

Camped in a state park for my overnight stay, it was memorial day weekend, one spot left ( a cancellation was available<yea, lucky!>) it was noisey here, idiot kids came in around 11, after everyone was already zipped up for the night and made camping, noisily, I might add. one idiot had a diesel truck so loud sounded like a freight train. next morning I got my revenge at 5:30am, packing up to leave to head east to Idaho. No pictures here, not sure why....

next stop was about 300 miles to joseph Oregon. Camped at a little place outside the town. they were having some kind of Chief Joseph fair days. lots of people selling stuff on the street in the main street of the town., reminds my of Fredericksburg. So I hung out, then the sky started to cloud over, snow was falling at the higher altitudes, and rain was forecast for that night.

next day, set out on the first leg of the Idaho Grand loop, that stretches from Utah, Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Oregon, and Washington. I didn't do all segments due to weather (again) and I came in from the east since you have to start in Salt Lake City. This leg is a little over 300 miles and ends up in Missoula, Montana.

finally stopped in Missoula after a very wet ride in the mountains. LOLO Pass, was covered with snow w/ 4ft snow banks. Roads were wet and temps in the 40's.
next leg (planned to Yellowstone) had to turn south to salt lake again.
            headed in to Utah.

the ride out was even more spectacular. Grand canyon has got nothing on this place, it was about a hundred miles and half a tank of gas. ( I did make it)

yes it was, and it was unforgettable. pictures don't do some of it justice. especially the coast. Its funny I took on a vette on the northern route of Pacific Coast hwy where it got "dragon"-Like for 20 miles through the canyons. I thought for sure he would be quicker. But a goldwing (uh mine) with a trailer walked away. But I guess people have no idea Goldwings are quite capable and fast.

There isn't much of the USA I haven't driven through, and that is some of the most breath taking.....its where I want to take the wife on vacation next year if we get to go. She has never been to that part of our country before.

I just couldn't believe how many people were on the road in the middle of the week at 8-9 in the morning. <--tourists, in the middle of may.
Most all of the viewpoints on the PCH were full, you couldn't find or even see an open parking space.
